ABOUT RISING GROUND: Founded in 1831 as the Leake and Watts Orphan House, Rising Ground is today an award-winning social service organization providing more than 25,000 children, adults, and families in the New York City area with the resources and skills needed to help them rise above adversity and positively direct their lives. A dedicated and compassionate team of more than 1,500 provides over 55 community, residential, and school-based programs at 71 sites across all five boroughs and Westchester. Personalized, high-impact key programs include special education schools; early childhood programs; residential and day services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities; family support services; residential treatment for youth with emotional disorders; foster care and adoption; juvenile justice services; mental health services; supports for unaccompanied migrant children; and services for survivors of intimate partner violence and their families.
Having completed a comprehensive rebranding effort, including changing its name, Rising Ground is continuing down a multiyear path of significant growth, recently merging with Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families (a subsidiary organization), and thereby has expanded its reach, budget, and impact. FUNDING: Rising Ground has a fiscal year 2021 annual operating budget of approximately $126M. Primary sources include more than $124M from revenue streams, largely government grants and contracts; and approximately $2M from individuals, foundations, and corporations, as well as competitive discretionary municipal sources.
THE OPPORTUNITY: The Chief Operating Officer/Executive Vice President (COO/EVP) will lead high-performing teams supporting operations in line with Rising Ground’s mission. The COO/EVP will coordinate the work of subordinate managers as they design and improve services and supports, collaborate with program management and staff, work cooperatively across departments, set and maintain standards, coach teams, drive growth, and improve departments’ effectiveness and efficiency.
The COO/EVP reports to the Chief Executive Officer, and oversees the Human Resources and Training, General Services, Management Information Systems (MIS), Performance Effectiveness and Measurement (PEM), and Administrative departments. Direct reports include two senior vice presidents, two vice presidents, and a director.
LOCATION: The COO/EVP will operate primarily from the headquarters in Brooklyn or the Bronx, however, he/she/they will travel to all Rising Ground site locations and will be a key player in overseeing the sale of the 32-acre Yonkers campus and the relocation of staff, programs, and services, spending some time there initially.
IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS: Able to connect with the work of Rising Ground, those who work for the organization, and those whom the organization supports; at least 10 years of senior management experience, preferably in a human services field or related not-for-profit setting; demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all facets of the workplace; dynamic, innovative problem-solving abilities; strategic thinker able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; demonstrated leadership in mobilizing staff energies; strong financial, evaluation, and analytical skills; ability to serve as an effective ambassador for Rising Ground; ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations with tact and diplomacy; high-level capacity to navigate in a diverse and caring environment; adept at handling multiple tasks effectively; warm, engaging, enthusiastic, and energetic; high standards of excellence and a supportive and growth-oriented management style; exceptional interpersonal skills including the capacity to motivate, inspire, guide, and support the development of teams; highly self-motivated; driven; excellent organizational skills, commitment to accuracy, and attention to detail; superior communication skills, both verbal and written; ability to rise above challenging situations to accomplish goals and to persevere despite temporary setbacks; willing to roll-up sleeves to get the job done; bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required; an advanced degree in a field of operations is an asset; ability to travel to local Rising Ground worksites is required; travel to conferences may also be required; the individual in this role will attend evening/weekend events and activities, as necessary.
