Good Shepherd Services (GSS), a leading NYC youth and family development organization, is seeking to fill the role of Assistant Executive Director (AED) of Government and External Relations (GER). An executive level position, the AED will work closely and collaboratively with teams that take the lead in sustaining public and private funding; creating dynamic external facing materials; managing public relations; and ensuring robust advocacy and compliance for this well-established and highly regarded agency.

About the Government and External Relations Division: The division consists of four departments: Government and Philanthropy (including the Grants and Contracts teams); External Relations, which manages special events, individual giving, and communications; Government and Community Relations, which leads public policy and advocacy; and Compliance and Risk Management. Key Responsibilities

Oversee the work of the Government and External Relations division and partner with the Executive Director to impact the human services sector on local, state, and national levels
Supervise four GER department directors in a collaborative manner, facilitating cross-functional opportunities
Ensure fundraising teams have the support and resources to sustain and increase the agency’s nearly $100M budget
Provide strategic and analytic support to guide decision-making in all areas influencing GSS’ external relationships, public standing, and ability to seek, maintain and expand public and private support
Play a key role in developing and implementing operational and strategic goals for the agency as a member of the Executive Team
Work closely with the Board of Directors, including staffing the risk management and development sub-committees, and covering other board responsibilities as needed; prepare quarterly flash reports on fundraising goals and present at Board of Directors meetings
Advance GSS’ policies and priorities by representing the organization to corporate partners, individual donors, government and elected officials, as well as and other supporters
Enhance relationships between GER, other internal support departments and program service providers

Experience and Characteristics

Leadership

Understanding of how institutional racism manifests in social services agencies and the courage to champion anti-racist and anti-oppressive stances
Demonstrated high level leadership and management skills
Strong sense of cultural humility and emotional intelligence
Compelling, transparent communicator and decision-maker
Experience creating a dynamic, collaborative work environment while managing multiple teams
Sound judgement and decision-making skills

Fundraising

Thorough understanding of non-profit fundraising budgets and strategic fundraising plans
Build and grow an individual giving program, with ability to unlock gifts from private family foundations and other major donors
Understand the national and local philanthropic landscape, with the ability to navigate it successfully and effectively promote social change

Communication

Able to oversee a focused communication strategy for amplifying GSS’ presence in the sector
Capacity builder who optimizes resources through the adoption of new technologies
Comfortable serving as a culture carrier and brand ambassador for the agency

Advocacy, Government & Community Relations

Experience in the field of health and human services related to government relations, public policy, advocacy and community relations
Understanding of the communities we serve and comfortable engaging with our participants
Experience making the policy “ask” at public hearings or in similar arenas

Contracts

Possess a high-level understanding of our government contracts, and ability to effectively advocate for the agency’s interests in various settings
Knowledge of City, State, and Federal funding streams and legislative processes.
Knowledge of government procurement and contracting processes

Compliance and Risk Management

Broad understanding of risk associated with non-profit organizations and approaches to mitigating them
Ability to use data to make informed decisions on primary risks
Experience responding to high-level critical incidents

Additional Qualifications

10-15 years of progressive leadership experience in non-profit management preferred
Proven success working in the New York and national media markets
Consensus-driven approach and ability to engage, mobilize and motivate staff at all levels of an organization
Executive presence, able to present internally and externally
Able to manage conflict skillfully and sensitively and to engage in courageous conversations
Candidates with BA/BS and advanced degree encouraged to apply
