    BACKGROUND: Since 1831, the mission of Sheltering Arms is to foster a society where every child and family served by the organization will have the opportunity to succeed and thrive. Sheltering Arms addresses the effects of social inequity in the most challenged communities in New York City. Through innovation and partnerships, the organization enables low-income children and their families to take steps toward brighter futures, free from the cycle of generational poverty. Today, that mission has never been more relevant. By providing opportunity and hope, the dedicated staff at Sheltering Arms have witnessed time and again the incredible successes that contribute to thriving communities: children who are school-ready, youth who are prepared for work and obtaining jobs, neighborhoods with reduced gun violence, victims of trauma moving forward in strength, and more. Sheltering Arms has achieved a strong reputation in the NYC human sector after many years of growth, and is at a pivotal moment in its history. A new strategic plan that will set the organization on course for continued success focuses on four key areas: Impact, Institutional Stability, Strategic Growth, and Visibility. FUNDING: Sheltering Arms had a FY 2017 budget of $95 million, of which $2.5 million came from private sources. PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Chief Development Officer will guide all external affairs efforts, including fundraising, marketing, communications/PR, volunteer management, and advocacy. S/he will build the impact of the organization’s programs by increasing contributed revenue, further developing and advancing the Sheltering Arms brand, and managing funding/volunteer partnerships with individuals, community organizations, and corporations across NYC. The CDO reports to the Chief Executive Officer and works closely with the program and finance teams and select board members. S/he leads a team of five and a small network of temporary employees, pro bono volunteers, and interns. This in an exciting opportunity for a seasoned development and communications professional with a keen sense of social justice and a passion to deliver real results for children and families across NYC. IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS: Dedication and passion for social change, with a clear commitment to the Sheltering Arms mission; track record of generating significant funds for not-for-profits across multiple revenue streams; a front-line major gift solicitor; successful experience working with board members and volunteers; strategic and creative as well as hands-on and bottom-line driven; experience with communications and marketing; resourceful; able to identify and tap into new approaches; tech savvy relative to fundraising and marketing strategies; superior communication skills as a writer, editor, and presenter; an accomplished team leader; experience with managing advocacy efforts that resulted in funding and policy changes; knowledge of the NYC human service sector and funding relationships; bachelor’s degree is required, an advanced degree is preferred.
