Programs that Work with Parents to Prevent Child Abuse:
New York State in collaboration with its counties and New York City funds a network of community-based programs working with families to prevent harm to their children. These programs, called Preventive Services Programs, are part of the New York State’s effort to protect children from abuse.
The programs help families struggling with substance abuse, alcoholism, domestic violence, and/or mental health needs, as well as families overwhelmed by poverty or the demands of caring for special needs children. While helping families to cope with their problems, the caseworkers at these programs also monitor the safety of their children and counsel parents in caring for them.
